Fitting a scope to a Number 4 - any tips please

I am investigating putting a scope onto my Number 4 for longer range target shooting at places like Sennybridge, where I need to pick up on military style targets rather than 'proper' target shooting a la Bisley against a nice white background.

I am not interested in making a No. 4 T clone, more along the lines of being able to have something I can fit to use on their range and then swap the iron sights back on to return the rifle to its original state for normal target shooting.

At the moment, I am leaning to a Fulton’s or Armalon no-smith mount, combined with a semi-vintage scope which wouldn’t look too out of place, such as a Pecar 4-10 x 45 with an accompanying set of rings.

However, as I don't have much experience of fitting or using scopes with Enfield rifles as I prefer iron sights, I wonder if anyone might be able to give me some guidance or make some (polite!) suggestions?

Thats probably the best way to go, but there are cheaper versions of the mounts you mention one ebay (or there was).

Why not just kill two - or several - birds with one stone. Make yourself a good No4T replica. It's not too difficult if you follow the guidance on the forum. THEN, if you need to use a telescope, you've got one.

If you want to put a super dooper commercial telescope onto it then that's possible too if you mount it a) into your original bracket or b) mount it onto a IIW mount as shown here recently.

Want to use iron sights........ Guess what........, they're already fitted and zeroed in for you.

Want to use a P-H 5 type side mounted 1/4MoA sight. Again, simplicity itself. P-H made some slightly modified to clear the rear body pad. These were also shown on the forum recently too.

Want a one-size-fits-all rifle?> You're already looking at one. All you need to do is get cracking. And afterwards you're left with a No4T rifle that's worth a whole lot more that the one you started with, albeit a replica. At least it'll be a GOOD one and competitive too..... Well......, what's keeping you..........?

Whatever scope you go for, fit a cheek pad. If you don't, the comb of the stock smacks you in the jaw every time you fire. It's not too bad for a couple of shots, but it gets tedious and uncomfortable after that, and the next day it's quite tender to the touch. If you use one of the replica No4T cheek pieces, you might want to acquire a spare butt first to avoid drilling into the original one.

not just on this site but in person. some people are sweet as can be on on envirionment but are ego monsters in another. i almost fell into that trap. make sure of what you want done and make sure your smith is listening. get everything in writing first and establish the value of the gun if his work fails.

your best bet is to go with a 4/T replica. shop around for good mounts about 4 companies make mount. and two of those make crap mounts. the 4/T mounts allow 1 inch diameter scopes which leaves you room to buy either a chicom repro scope (also crap)or a very good modern scope which in many cases will put your rifle right up there in the same legue with many modern rifles.

still, be sure your machinist can and is able to communicate with you and has no personality disorders or competency disorders.

I think the original post does state he doesn't want to go down the repro No4T path, its a simple case of finding the correct mount and asking advice on these, you can spend the money on a named mount or get the same for a fraction of the cost if you look around.

I'd highly recommend the Armalon No4 EN4 scope mount. It's extremely secure and doesn't require drilling the receiver. In my opinion they are the best non-drill mount available and for all intents and purposes as good as a drilled and tapped bridge mount.

Thanks for the information so far. To confirm I don't want a no 4 T replica, just a secure mount and decent looking scope to look ok on the rifle without breaking the bank!
I think it's going to be either the armalon or fultons mount - neither is cheap but they do come highly recommended. The fultons is steel so tending towards that one.
As for the scope any suggestions? I thought about a pecar however I've been suggested a vintage Schmidt and Bentder, 6x42 or similar?

If you can get hold of an AI green S&B 6x42 that would suit the rifle nicely. They do come up for sale on eBay every so often around £600+ and Sporting Services can get them / have them :

Not cheap, but a fantastic scope.

But the S&B green isn't calibrated for .303 and nor can you get a standard factory ball drum. And if he's what we call 'a click counter', then he'll have to learn the clicks for every variation of ammo he's shooting.

As a matter of interest, why don't you want to go down the repro No4T route? What you're suggesting, with the Armalon/Fulton mount (very good too I hasten to add.....) is already restricting you to telescope shooting. If you really think that it's an easy chop and change from month to month/range to range/comp to comp then you need to think again. Every time that mount comes off and the irons go back, it HAS to be re-zeroed. AND vice verca. Think carefully I say........... And if you're going into the realms of a S&B scope or the like, you're already most of the way to buying a No32!
