Has anyone purchased and read the book "Mosin-Nagant M1891: Facts and Circumstance in the History and Development of the Mosin-Nagant Rifle" by Frederic Faust ?
I was checking out what's new in the zoo on Thrift Books and this book popped up; not sure why I haven't seen it before. Looks like it might be a regurgitation of his book 2016 book The Lineage of the Mosin-Nagant
Just wondering if its worth a read or just another run of the mill Mosin Nagant book.
I checked it out on Amazon and you can look at the first 20 some pages. It isn't a huge book, 91 or so pages but it looks interesting. I ordered one and will have it Monday if you can wait a few days for a review.
Well let me know how it goes, I have a couple books on Mosins but any quality book deserves a spot on my shelf.
I have the small collector's series book on them but that's it. I have better books on their bayonets than the rifles. Bayonet book has about a 100 variations when I thought there were two or three.
Not seeing the book arriving today. Says it will be here by 10:00 pm but I doubt it. According to tracking, it hasn't even shipped yet.
Book has shipped and they are saying it will be here today. I've been seeing this problem with Amazon for about a year now. Making promises they don't keep. If it's going to take 3 days, that's fine, just don't tell me it's going to get there in one.
Alexander Yuschenko's book, M91/30 rifles and M38/M44 carbines in 1941-1945, accessories and devices (Model 1891/1930 rifle), is the one to get but he only printed 500 hard/physical copies years ago. I need to get it on Kindle.
He's working on a bigger volume.
The book has arrived. First, it isn't very large. The package was extremely light for a book. It is 8 1/2 x 11 so it is large format but it isn't very thick. 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick. Paper quality is poor, plain white paper, no gloss at all. It is nicely illustrated; most photos are decent quality. Some of the line drawings are not the best but all are clear. Without actually reading it I can't say if it is accurate or not but in leafing through, I see a lot of things I never saw about these rifles before. Several Finnish variations I never heard of. They also talk about the disposition of the US manufactured rifles quite a bit more than I was aware of. It obviously is not large enough to cover everything, it isn't what I call eye candy, everything is black and white but for the price, I think it was a good buy.
There is discussion of grenade launchers, the ammunition differences between Russian and Finnish, snipers, the various nations that used it, where it is still being used today but I don't think it was updated to the Ukraine war. There are some old advertisements, photos of its use as a targeting device on artillery pieces which is kind of hilarious as it's strapped on using firewood logs as spacers. Goes over the various types of ammo. It was $11 shipped, definitely worth that. If I saw it in a bookstore, I'd be willing to go $20-$25 to take it home with me. I actually have similar books like it on obscure topics that I have paid this much for. One thing it is missing is a nameplate on the spine. It will disappear in your bookcase unless you put it with other similar books.
My word, better get it while you can, the collectors series book is being listed at $215.98 at the moment. Used examples in the $70 range. I think I paid $14 for mine.
I have that book, and it is a excellent book, but only for the specific years and models mentioned. It isn't a good book for generalists or anyone looking for information outside that era.
Started reading it and it has editorial faults , notably repeating sentences. Still a good read if you can overlook the faults.
