I think that you are in the right place. But, when you consider that the last USGI M1 rifle was made in 1957, I don't see where it's critical that videos or books be current. The topics that are "stickies" above the discussion questions are a great resource, both for the novice & advanced shooter/collector.
Folks here really enjoy looking at rifles, so you may get more interest in your questions if you post photos of your "new" rifle.
What questions do you have?
CMP forum is more US rifles (Garand, M-1 carbine, 1903/1903a3 etc) specific. Many folks are on both forums.

sorry, not ignoring the site but been outta town for awhile shoveling it all uphill. i got a SG and a FG in recently. the SG has a '53 marlin bbl which i understand were pretty accurate in the later productions. TE is 3 and MW is 1 plus. i understand that they only made 50,000 of theses? so i guess my question is, is it theorhetically "rare" and accurate, sans shooting trials of course. the FG has a stock made from a 2x4 i think so i bought an old stock to be refinished and it has a P in a circle on the handgrip?? also on the CMP buttstocks the sling swivel just screws into the wood but on the old stock there is a "mouth" shaped cutout. hows that work? thanks in advance for the help. i will post pics when i figure it out. can i post em from my computer or do i have to use a picture service thing? oh, i read horror stories about stock OP rod springs so i got in a kit from orion 7 ? and replaced the OP rod spring in the SG. not brave enough yet to disassemble it further yet. and...the OP rod is a NM.
So, I'm guessing the "SG" is Springfield Garand, but what's an "FG"? Also the M1 rifle never had a "Mouth shaped cutout" anywhere... Also the sling swivels don't screw into the wood. Time for pics... You can post them from your computer, just follow the directions on the sticky you see in the beginning of this forum.
I think SG is service grade FG field grade.
Attachment 92890Attachment 92891ok, disregard the comment on the buttstock swivel. sometimes my observations are made from memory and of course they are wrong. gonna try and post pics. i am in the process of deconstructing my reloading room and house and 3 shops in anticipation of an eventual move so the pics get taken in less than ideal backgrounds.
Clean looking rifle though. More pics would be good too...details...
