While I'm not terribly knowlegable 'bout the M14 / M1A, I understand that "Different" has a web site which is highly regarded.
You can access it here: http://www.imageseek.com/m1a/welcome.html

See if the official M14 manual posted in a "sticky" thread at the top of this forum is helpful ... :)

Two books that I have are, The Last Steel Warrior U.S. M14 Rifle by Frank Iannamico and The M14-Type Rifle A Shooters And Collector's guide by Joe Poyer. Both books have a lot of detailed information. HTH
Try this link, I found it as a sticky at the top of this forum:

Thanks a lot guys, your information has been very helpful. I see that the M1A takes a lot more time to get to know than the M1 Garand, not that the Garand is any peice of cake. It's just that a Garand bbl. would have the maker name on the bbl., if military issue. My M1A's are numbered one is (mfr26978 9345206 8-83 82472 ) the other is marked ( noa-9349847-10-92-3961 ). I found out that the 9345206 stands for nat'l. match med. weight, and the 9379847 stands for nat'l match heavy weight. But I still don't know who made the bbl's.
Thanks again and Happy New Year :)
