At a local estate sale there is what appears to be a Springfield 1903 Transit case. its just a wood crate with no dividers or anything but it is marked on the outside of lid with the serial number and on the inside of the lid there is a piece of paper stating what the contents should be. It looks to be in good solid condition with the latches and hinges still intact.
I have never seen one for sale, what is its value?

I gotta say, I’ve never even *heard* of one of these. Neat! I hope someone comes along that knows more.
Thats an interesting item, never seen one of those before and I do have a thing for military storage boxes. Whats the serial number on the box? It can be researched and might be a hit on SRS.

Going to take a look at it tomorrow. The S/N appears to be 13626?7 which I was told on another forum falls within the 1903 NM and sported range. I think they want $100 for it.
I would expect it was for a rifle sold to civilian service. Probably a nice one, like a factory sporter or NM. If you get it i'd love to see more pictures.

I have a very late (1939) M1903A1 NM with the original Springfield Army shipping crate and a 1914 M1903 DCM Sales rifle with the original crate. Neither of the containers looks anything like that box. The lids are screwed in place on both boxes. That box looks like something a collector put together; I doubt it was from Springfield Armory. I would not pay a lot for it.
I like the box for 100 bucks as it’s another chest for a rifle. Real or not it’s cool and adds something when you get ready to sell it over some other 03’s without a box.
I think the best way to date the box is by the latches. I suspect they are quite late, possibly post war. Whoever put the box together was selling multiple rifles and had access to all the ancillary bits like the screwdriver and manuals.
