Guys, I came across a MLE 1896 serial number 252 which I have now, and was wondering if anyone knew of a serial number lower than that? I have learned that it was built by LSA and was one of 319,000 produced by 4 suppliers.

Beautiful old rifles these...I never had the luxury of owning one. I was looking at one with bayonet about 30 years ago and a friend snatched it up before I could buy it... What are the initials stamped on the butt?
Beautiful original rifle... The initials on the stock are "M&D"-Militia and Defense.
Dont know about prices in Canada, but on the US market, you'd be looking at $2500 and higher.
While you do have a low-ish serial number, The ones that command higher prices are serial numbers in the one and two digits.
Here is a tough one to beat. Very lucky s/n for some who are into that. Unfortunately, I was outbid on this beauty project over the weekend. A nice piece of history.
IIRC Canada bought a thousand of those, so that gives some provenance for the serial number. Guessing that the low number made a letter prefix superfluous.
Someone who knows these better will be along soon no doubt.
