Hello,
I have just purchased this Ljungmann, can anyone tell me the purpose of this side mount?
I am assuming it is not for a scope because as far as I am aware Ljungman's never had scopes mounted & potentially the action would get in the way with the scope?
Any help would be great.

Sorry, but if you do find out, I'm quite interested.
At this distance it looks like a Moisin Nagant sidemount. A good choice given that they can be properly collimated to the bore. All AG42s have three holes in the left side of the receiver, reputedly for a scope mount that was never made. The holes are covered by the stock usually.
In my books is nothing to find that they made snipers out of the AG-42. It seems that it is aftermarket. But it isnt a Nagant sidemount, the ones that i`ve seen are looking different to that.

And thinking about it again, you'd have to use a long eye relief scope as there is no way to cock the rifle with a scope fitted, unless you weld on a cocking lever to side of the bolt cover.
Read up on what ammo is suitable for the AG42, there have been problems with some types of ammo.
Almost all of the AG42 rifles that came into Canada, had those plates. We assumed they were for grenade launching sights. They are definitely not after market add ons.

Sorry, I no longer own one, good accurate rifles but they destroy cases. Ammunition for them was very hard to come by as well so I sold them off. In 1980, they went for $35 each or 10 for $250. I also find them quite ungainly to use.
That side plate was a common fixture on all of the ones I had though.
