Punch mark on 1903 RIA NS bolt locking lug

Gentlemen,

I wish to ask your advice/interpretation/assistance regarding a punch mark and/or "marked indent" on one of the forward locking lugs of a NS RIA 1903 Springfield bolt.

There is some kind of a mark(s) that can be seen on the enlarged photo as well as the round punch mark seen on the other lug in the other photos.

The person who recently purchased this bolt from me sent it to be parkerized and the CMP told him it was unsafe because the mark meant that the steel was too soft.
I wish not only interpretation, but documentation/reference for these "marks" / "indents".

Are you talking about the bolt stop pin notches ? Before WW2 the 1903 had the bolt stop assembly (part #B147053) inside the receiver.

No....I am thinking that the person means the punch mark and the other two "marks" that can be seen on the locking lugs. Please read original thread for additional info.

The original plan was for troops to fire thier '03s as a single shot , keeping the mag. in reserve . With the mag cut-off and no follower touching to keep the bolt back if the rifle was tilted down , the stop would friction fit into the dimples to do that job . Made it easier and quicker to get the loose round in.

I can see a tiny 7 and something else under it in the 1st photo. That isn't just a punch mark.

The original poster isn't talking about the bolt stop dimples on the other locking lug. The stamps are on the other forward locking lug.

what are the other markings on the bolt?

Why would the military go to the trouble to mark an unsafe bolt with little itty-bitty , easily missed , do-not-use-or-someone-will-die marks rather than just throw it into the scrap heap ?

If reject, it would be destroyed. Odd punch with a number, very odd.
