Bat vs. gun;

During the late 70s and early 80s my brother and I lived in a **very** rough neighborhood in Philadelphia. Well, rent was definitely cheap! After a couple close calls I decided to arm myself. So did my brother. he got a nice, brand name .32 revolver, Hi-Standard or something like that. Easy to pack, not too obvious.

I got a framing hammer handle that I would carry sticking up out of my pack.

The stick came in handy a couple of times, and let me tell you a stick trumps any weapon you're likely to run into on the street, except a firearm. Mainly I used diplomacy and speed to avoid conflict.

My brother was always in trouble with that gun, he almost got killed on the street. He was a little reluctant to use the gun early on in a confrontation, mostly because getting caught using it was worth 18 months in Holmesburg.

I don't think heat does you much good unless you are willing to use it, and a law-abiding person is going to risk that fatal pause- how bad do I want to do this? - unless he's got a permit. In fact, you could say a law-abiding person carrying without a permit is a contradiction in terms.

To paraphrase the "Duke" in his last movie "The Shootist".

willing to use it. Most men will pause, blink an eye, or give a thought
in a situation before they pull the trigger. I won't".

There's so many things wrong with that whole episode. The clerk brings out a rifle(?) and then proceeds to duck down while he loads(?) it. He was so thankful the guy didn't hit him with the bat he gave him forty bucks. I hope it was his money to give away. If his wife finds out there'll be trouble. Now there's a criminal still on the loose. Wouldn't go that way in AZ.

I would give him "mercy". That is what would be laser engraved on the "inside" of the dust cover of my AR-15. Only visible after the shot is fired. I bet the crooks with bats are lined up out the door at that store.
