Some pictures from Alaska

As some might know the better half and I just finished a cruise to Alaska, the weather and beer were great.

Some of my fellow Canadians here might see these pictures on a Canadian forum some of us share, but I thought some of my American friends might like to see them too.

Beautiful Ken, Thank you so much, dad was in on the fight in the Aleutians, then on to the fight in Europe in '44, where the cold weather lessons learned in the Aleutians served his guys well during the coldest winter(44-45) in European history.My dad was, 1st Lieut Maurice D. Wood 78Inf, D Co. 310th, heavy weapons/mortars.

Dad passed away in early March of 2000.He joined the Army in '38, as the depression was still bad in Mo., he made Sgt. before the Aleutian campaign, then told to volunteer for Officer's school after the fighting had ended up north. He was always a nomcom at heart.Thank you again for the photos

Trying to understand the square breech hole in the 8lb Parrot cannon???

Have a clearer shot of the muzzle of that one, thought I read C.C.C ####### 1862 8lbs.

Aleutians, eh? Attu, Adak, Dutch Harbor? I was on Attu for a brief layover in '83 ("It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from here.", and, yes, you CAN see Siberia on a clear day!) - "Attu Wind Sock" is a 500lb bomb casing hanging by a length of heavy chain! I spent 3 years on Adak - charming place. Several of the old quonsets remain and are in use as "getaway" cabins, the runways are some improved since it was retaken, and all for naught - the US pulled out of there c.1990. Great caribou hunting (we're talking Boone and Crockett here!), if you can get over there!! If you haven't seen it, "Report from the Aleutians" is a very interesting documentary that was nominated for an Oscar and was narrated by John and Walter Huston. Books would have to include "The Thousand-mile War" by Brian Garfield - incredible history, including stories of do-or-die by Catalinas used as dive-bombers - bet you can guess what happened when the pilot tried to pull that sucker out of a dive - with that huge wing connected to the fuselage by a pylon...the wing pulled out of the dive, but the fuselage tore free. Yet, they kept going...
