A friend picked up a carbine yesterday and it is oddly marked form what I am use to seeing. It has the last four numbers of the serial number (3672) stamped on the operating slide, handguard, stock & the trigger housing and electro penciled on the bolt. On the bottom of the trigger housing is another four numbers 0638 and the letters LGKNO, there are two dots above the O. Best guesses?

M1 Carbines in Austria: The Gendarmerie
I think this is one that went to the Bavarians and then was sold to the Austrians. The marking on the trigger housing is consistent with the Austrians. The others are consistent with the Bavarians. See if there are markings on the receiver right along side the bolt. I have one with all the same markings you describe and it very faintly says Bavarian Forestry Police on the receiver.
LGKNO = Landes Gendarmerie Kommando Nieder Österreich. So it`from Austria.

but who had the practice of putting/ copy the SN. in front of the rear sight?

If the new adjustable sight obscured the serial number during rebuild/or when the flip sight was replaced,then the serial number was stamped in front of the new sight.

Bottom of trigger guard- WB-LP-2265
(Württemberg Landes Polizei.- The Wuerttemberg inventory number is 2265)

The markings on the trigger guard are from the Wuerttemberg Landes Polizei. Wuerttemberg's version of Bavaria's Rural Police.
This was likely done after the carbine was turned over to Bavaria by Wuerttemberg.
