I do not know. The best I can find in Leslie's book on the SAW is a summer pith helmet worn only by privates and NCO'S. Looks like a salad bowl.
I copied these images in high resolution so they can be copied and magnified.
I di not check the names against the Rough Rider list in the book. You could be right as I know nothing about that trooper.
The "Salad Bowl"guy is a sargent.
