What is the reasoning behind the glob of grease in the assembly? Also do I need to re-pack the bugger with grease or just wipe it down with oil before re-assembly?
I also couldn't believe the nooks and crannies of the receiver and rear sight set up when I tore it down for a summer cleaning.

The grease is simply to protect the parts against water and ultimately rust. That assembly was not intended for user maintenance or cleaning. Since presumably you will not be carrying the rifle in heavy rain or mud, you can just oil the parts and forget the grease.

Thanks, I had to rig up a couple of twisted thick rubber bands and a sharpie pen to apply enough steady pressure to get the set screw back in. I didn't have a clamp, so I improvised. I do not think I'll be taking that apart again real soon.

Yes, the bolt stop is a pain to re-assemble. I used a quick clamp like you can find at Home Depot. I think it would be near impossible to do without some sort of clamp!
