4th Division coming ashore June 6th
The Fourth Division arrived in the UK in early 1944. It took part in the Normandy Invasion landings at Utah Beach, with the 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Division being the first surface-borne Allied unit to hit the beaches at Normandy on D-day, 6 June 1944

I cannot tell, but does the first guy in line on the left side have on a BAR Belt?
If so, why is he carrying an M1?

I found it strange that the assistant BAR man would be carrying an M1. I had thought they'd be carrying an M1 Carbine, due to weight.
It may have been a case of personal preference, or the CO's orders. Capt. Winters preferred the Garand over the carbine.
He was probably told the Germans shoot officers with carbines first. Making anyone with a M1 carbine a prime target.
