Remington Rand bitser..

I picked up today...it has a SN#1432530 that makes the frame 1943 R.R. The frame is very thin on finish..all the markings are there; ordnance wheel, FJA, K D 4 on trigger guard. Hammer has fine cross hatched pattern, takedown serrated, safety serrated, trigger stamped crosshatched. The grips are Keyes, mag is marked R on toe, MSH is arched with 8 serrations. Barrel is not GI..stamped COLT .45 AUTO. The glitch is the slide..it is p marked Ithaca and about 98% condition. No re-arsenal marks on the pistol. The pistol seems pretty solid. I miss the old SRS site!

There is a lot of bad information on the web.

However, Mr. Clawson's information came directly from the shipping and procurement records researched for his book. The serial number data in his books is correct. I just recently posted that information online on another M1911 site to be used there by members of that site, with his permission.

Some web sites re-use information they do not understand, and then put it into another format...resulting in bad info. Some information is just incorrectly identified.

In some cases, contract dates are mistaken for manufacturing dates. In other cases, contract serial ranges are mistkaen for pistols actually produced. Some sites show serial numbers of pistols that were never produced. They don't take into consideration all the information. Contracts were cancelled when the wars ended. All the assigned serial numbers were not used because all the pistols were not produced.

I knew I should have bought Clawsons book..at NGD there was a fantastic collection of 1911 and 1911A1 pistols. The gentleman has copies for sale and I didn,t make it back to his booth. He did look at my Colt 1911 shipped from Colt to Springfield Armory 15 May 1918. I was concerned that the grips were not correct and it turns out that they were..thanks Scott. You know me as Wayne.

Much of the information concerning the 1911 and 1911A1 pistols was simply copied from other sources with no research into whether it was correct or not. This simply perpetuates incorrect information.
I ran a couple of Remington Rand serial numbers from 1942 through the site, and they also came up as 1943.
I also ran Remington Rand serial number 2619013, which was the last serial number assigned to Remington Rand but never built, and it comes up as manufactured in 1945

The sn#list in the back of the Blue Book also has this listed as 1943 production. I took a closer look at the barrel...it is [C] marked on left side lug...no P . For a frame with such a thin finish the internals look really good as far as the rails and wear points.. There was sticky congealed grease/oil under the grips..had to gently pry them off. I am assuming this would have been a parked finish? Would small parts be blued?

Those are great specific examples of the bad information on many web sites. .
