This marks on your South African rifle are Pressure proofmarks from Birmingham Proof House wich means ( as i know) that the barrel passed the test for nitropowder. But no idea for the Z.

The broad arrow in the "U" are the South African ownership mark as stated by gunner. The stacked rifles on the Knox Form is the commercial trade mark for BSA. The 9 54 is September 1954. the crossed "swords" are military proof marks. I do not know what the "Z" denotes

as in every country coding is different.
Or even a straight answer from the proof house come to that!
