Keep corrosives away from ammo cans!

This July 4 afternoon, we were getting ready to leave for some festivities when I noticed some heavy, thick rust on some ammo cans. I knew it wasn't supposed to be there & hadn't been there a couple of weeks before. I was even more alarmed when I found the rust was wet. I began pulling cans out to see how many were affected (7) and then tried to find the source. I had a gallon size bleach jug that sprung a a leak that was sitting on a wooden shelf above the ammo. Perhaps 24 ounces had leaked out. The black line in the photo shows the level. When I set it on the concrete driveway, it formed a 4' long slick within 20 minutes so it was a pretty good leak; it could not have been leaking more than a day or two. When I moved the jug, I was amazed to see it had dissolved the shelf. I poured vinegar on the cans and followed up with a steel wire brush & soap & water. Only one cae was breached and this was an old one that already was rusty. I'll finish the cans by repainting them with Rustolem. No more bleach near the cans!

Those cans remind me of what most vehicles look like after a few years of winter driving around here!

I built a room under my basement step for ammo storage, locked. Nothing goes in it but ammo!

Those look like the ugly ammo cans I get at the show for a buck apiece. And they all cleaned up nice.
