There are three categories of repair in the British Army. X indicates that it's been found during the annual UEI (unit equipment examination - it used to be called the PRE for Periodic REME Examination...., same thing though) to need a UNIT repair. That is a smallish repair well capable of being undertaken by the unit Armourers. Or, if the unit doesn't have its own Armourers, then it'll be sent to a Field workshop to do the job. Occasionally, these small (we call them 'minor units' will just side-load their kit over to a unit with Armourers who do their minor unit repairs. Usually, this will be a white letter X
The next sign is a yellow Y. This is for a repair that needs a FIELD workshop repair. This would be something like a new fore-end or bolt where the unit Armourers wouldnot be equipped to do it due to time or complexity. A new bolt or a fore-end will need a special Armourers test range.
The next is a red Z. For a BASE workshop repair which is the equivalent of a FTR. There are some sub categories of these repairs such as Y-UF (unfit to fire) or Z-BER beyond economic repair etc etc.
There, a complicated answer to a simple qustion. How do I know these things I ask myself. Maybe I ought to get out a little more!
