The 37th Infantry Division was a unit of the United States Army in World War I and World War II. It was a National Guard division from Ohio, nicknamed the "Buckeye Division". Today it is the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, with battalions from both Ohio and Michigan.

Notice how shiny the gas cyl. on the front Garand is. Wouldn't want to try to hide with that one.

To bad modern finishing methods were not around then.

This doesn't "add up". The date is 1944 yet they are using Gas Traps?????

The guy in the back is kinda easing it, smoking while on patrol?

Plus, my DI FM Spady and later my Platoon Leaders always said "Don't BUNCH UP, one grenade will get you all".

My understanding is that during some of these island jobs, there was no "on" and "off" patrol - you were always on. As a result, you'd probably grab a smoke whenever you could.

They're not gas trap rifles, bayonet lug is too far forward. Most of these photos were staged for the Signal Corps photographers so they shouldn't be taken too seriously.

When I was in the Army, it was "don't punch up one _snowflake_ will get you all"
