1907 Sling question

When did the military switch from brass claws to steel? Was there an approximate date/year when brass clawed slings were no longer available for issue. The reason for the question is to determine the most correct sling for display on a WWII era 1903A3 and Garand. TIA --RBruce

I've got several Boyt slings with steel claws dated "44" and a Milsco with brass clays dated "43"

Some Boyt 1942 slings have brass hooks, but steel hooks predominate. Assuming the slings were in high demand at that time and were used as soon as received, by the time the 03-A3 was issued the brass hooks would have been replaced with steel.

It has brass hooks and the stitching appears to be the same as USGI 1907 slings. Brauer Bros Mfg Co, St. Louis.

I believe the switch was in late 1942. But the sling manufactures still had the brass frogs in stock and used what they had.

The holster manufacturers switched from brass to steel or alloy hangers early in 1942 due to the strategic need for brass.

Not the sun tan lotion either. This 1942 Boyt has what looks like copper frogs. It is on my 9-41 SA Garand. Any ideas? :dunno:

I had one of those too Bill. I took it to be a wash over steel.
