Looks like he is missing a M1903 sling swivel screw....
Two rifles? Notice the small snap pocket on the lower left inside of the pants, could be for the para knife? Also the low flying piper type plane. Cool pic, thanks Mark.....Frank
He looks to be retrieving gear that belonged to someone else. He has a slung rifle and is wearing a cartridge belt with a canteen yet is holding these same items that are obviously not his and maybe looking to pick up something else that is still on the ground.

Reminds me of Groucho Marx famous line from the movie "Go West with the Marx Brothers" - "How they handle all this stuff and ride a horse at the same time is beyond me"!!
you are probably correct that the man shown in the photograph is picking up gear other than his own. The adventure of jumping out, or perhaps preparing to jump out (?) of an aeroplane is one that I can certainly live without....

I certainly didn't like it but many guys in my outfit did. In fact I know a couple of guys who still do it.
