Unless I missed something...The link says they were found in 1984...You would think that island was scoured pretty well, in after-action accounting, mop ups, etc....

My father was in the 4th Pioneer Battalion, 4th Marine Division on Iwo. One of his duties was sealing caves that contained Japanese soldiers. These were caves that were either too risky to attack or during mop-up contained soldiers that were unwilling to surrender. Satchel charges and sometimes bulldozers were the tools of choice.
Back in the eighties he was contacted by the U.S. and Japanese governments asking if he would be willing to go back to Iwo and help locate caves he sealed so remains could be removed. He declined the request.
