Maybe I'll dig out a sling swivel one just to put that to rest.
Why would they add swivels? "Why" is something I can speculate on. That they did, I have records for.
I suspect it was because of the new equipments; guns don't exist independently of the gear. The new and exciting Mounted arm was the M1903 - a gun with sling swivels.
Also a gun with a bayonet mount if you think about it. Mounted guys get swords. Swords were pretty much passe.
Interesting point of the day - that arsenal work in adding the bayonet mount to the carbines I've posted? It pre-dates the release of the Krags to schools by 4 years. Food for thought.
