Serial number info
Just bought my 1st K98 mauser and looking for some answers. If I understand correctly it was mfg'd by J.P.Sauer & Sohn with the markings 147 and 1940 on the receiver. It is a RC with Nazi markings. Not a no's matching rifle. Serial no. 5639 on barrel & receiver. Is there a way to know how many were made that year and what date this might fall close to? Any help would be great!:surrender:

The Germans used a 1-9999 system. When they reached 9999 they started over again at 1a, 2a, 3a etc. All the way to 9999a and then 1b. Get the idea? J.P. Sauer was the largest manufacturer of K98's (I think). Good luck, sounds like a nice K98.

Is there a letter after the ser nr? If not it was made in Jan 1940.
Sauer made approx 215,000+ in 1940.

Thanks Sarge! Looks to be a C or G under the serial number. Is that what you are referring to?:dunno:

It's a c because the Germans used small case, not caps. That makes your rifle the 35,639th rifle built in 1940. Probably in Feb?
