Investment Cast Receivers?????

I read the other day, somewhere, that the receivers on the Steyr FAL's were NOT milled but investment cast. That surprised me. Evidently, some of the very early semi-auto or supposed to be semi-auto rifles were milled. Can anyone provide background, confirmation, clarification. I have one of the Steyrs BTW.
