Help with M-114 stock, repair/mods.

I didnt see a specific forum spot for wood work.........so.......I have a pistol grip stock, typical M14 style. I want to use it for a Garand for the wife who needs a short pull, this is 11 1/2 with no butt pad. It has been inletted for selector parts on one inside & hard to tell what for on the other inside. Comparing it to a Garand stock, I will need to fill in two areas, 1" x 4" and 1" x 2", about 1/4" thick. The stock also has splits through to the outside in both places. Planned on drilling a couple of 1/8 vertical holes & glue in pieces of dowel rod.

How practical would it be to just fill the inletted areas with target rifle bedding material (Accu-glass???) ???? Or will I have to put some shaped pieces of wood in with ??? glue??? PJHeck heckinohio@att.net

You will have to remove the M14 metal insert then inlet the stock for the M1
receiver, after you do this the front receiver legs will extend beyond the stock. Also difficult to plug the magazine well unless you are using a magazine on the M1. Often better to just modify an old M1 stock

There is always the BM59 Nigerian Mark 4 stocks also , but I know you know about the BM59 's !

I have done this by using the following 1) install an M14 barrel in an M1 receiver 2) machine/grind the receiver to accept M14 mags 3) use a special recoil spring guide to lock into the front of the M14 mag 4) modify the trigger housing for the mag catch, modify the receiver for the bolt hold-open catch
5) inlet the stock and grinding down the front receiver legs and add a spacer to the front stock ferrule.

I have 2 such BM59 conversions one using a SARCO kit and one as a version of a SAW.The Mark 4 uses a heavier and longer barrel with a pistol grip stock similar to a (M14E2),longer op rod,and carry handle that attaches to the barrel .
I am currently interested in the M1 conversion that uses M14 mags .
Which filler block and spring guide did you use, or did you make your own ? Did you have trouble with the carbide bits chipping or did you anneal the receiver first and then reheat treat ?
I assume you used a BM59 bolt stop in your conversion ?
If you have a source for the spring guide and filler block, I would be interested !

The M1 receivers that I used were ground out inside to accept the M14 mags.

I made the spring guides and filler block, the M1 follower arm pin was used to retain the spring guide. The spring guide was machined to move like the M14 spring guide providing support to the front of the magazine.

The M1 op rod was modified to work with the M14 barrel in the M1 receiver,
this op rod used the M14 op rod spring. Another conversion that was less work was to retain the M1 receiver/M14 barrel and use the eight shot en bloc clips in 7.62x51mm, but required work on the M1 stock

An unmolested M14E2 stock with all original metal, no cracks etc. is worth in excess of $450, more if the wood is nicely figured. If this is the case you might want to consider selling it and looking for a less expensive stock for your project. JMHO

The walnut M14E2 stocks were always difficult to find in nice condition and worth more too. Fred's had some walnut years ago.
