Questions about Savage

I'm looking at buying a No4 Mk1 or Mk1* Savage. I found one on Gun Broker that has the brass ID disk in the stock. Is this correct? Is it the wrong butt stock?

The same rifle also has the leaf-drop rear sight. Is this correct? I saw the pictures of the "new" Savage No4 in the Knowledge Library and it has the battle sight.

I've never seen a Savage with a butt disc, but there's a lot smarter folks about Enfields than me here. :lol:

Also on the subject of Savages, with thanks to Advisory Panel member Lance, there's also a rare "all correct" 1942 No.4 Mk1*(T) Savage Sniper Rifle (less scope) (click here) .....

Lance's article, accompanied by a detailed 165 pic photo montage, speaks to this example as being one of approximately 3,400 Savage rifles converted by Holland and Holland and re-barreled with an Enfield 5 groove barrel, however, it was never fitted with a matching No.32 scope.

If it is a NZ marked No4 a butt disc would be correct.
When the NZDF sold off its cadet rifles earlier this year, nearly all the No4s & No9s had butt disc's, even some of the No8s had disc's as well, interestingly the No8s had 2 different size disc's & 3 different locations.

Where would the NZ be marked?

I've seen some No5 rifles that were FMP marked that had the disc too.

My 1943 NZ owned Savage has the markings N^Z and service serial number on the left side of the butt socket. There's no marking disc.

Is that painted like a rack number or stamped into the wood?

Brian, my 1943 Savage is marked the same as yours, no butt disc either.
The butt disc on NZ No4s isn't the rule, just seems to be plenty out there, as for the NZ markings, there seems to be a few different types/location of markings, N^Z stamps on the butt for instance, have be found on either side.

The markings are stamped into the butt socket beneath the factory serial number. It's "as new".

I've also got two 1942 and a 1943 Long Branch that are marked the same way except the markings are above the serial numbers. The '43 date rifle has been issued and has character. The other two are "as new". Two, (one '42 and the '43), are stocked in birch. The other '42 in walnut.
