New, to me, M1903 Colt

I paid a visit to a local gun store that I had never been to before and this was there calling to me :). It is a Colt M1903 in .32 ACP. Serial number is 293263. It looks to have been refinished at least once, and while not a Bill Adair quality job, it looks pretty good. I right side pearl grip has a mising piece behind the screw, and given what Patton said about pearl grips I will probably replace them. It came with a 2 tone mag.

Can anyone tell me the approximate date of manufacture, and anything else about it?

According to proofhouse.com, your 1903 was made in 1919. I qualify this statement because I know the data found on the proofhouse website can be misleading. So, if someone else has better info, please speak up!

As a bit of history, Colt did not market the pistol as the Model 1903. It was the Colt Pocket Hammerless, and further identified by the caliber. Collectors added the model designations, and the .380 pistol was called the Model 1908 as was the .25 ACP.

Did they ever come with pearl grips, or was that always after market?

I am never lucky enough to find collectables in good condition like the Colt. IMO, a great buy.

Pearl grips were an extra cost option, but in just about every case the grips had the Colt medallions in them. Aftermarket pearl grips were readily available.

actually they have a hammer, you have to look for it.

As a historical footnote the Colt .32 hammerless was Al Capone's personal carry gun.

The Colt Pocket Hammerless series greatest popularity came with their purchase by the military. From being issued to OSS agents to officers attaining the rank of Brigadier General, the pistols have a place in military weapon collecting.
