Bought my second Smelly

The I didn't intend to get another No1 MkIII but the price was right. I got it on GunBroker and probably won't take possession until next week at the earliest. It's supposed to be a matching number barrel, bolt, receiver, forearm, rear sight, and nosecap. It was manufactured in 1918.

At this time were the only manufacturers of No1 MkIII rifles Enfield, BSA and LSA? When was the magazine cut off done away with?

My other one is a BSA made, 1915 No1 MkIII*.

KarlJ, The only two SMLE manufacturers with Mk.III production extending into1918 were LSA and Lithgow, IIRC. BTW, BSA began the star rifles in 1915 so yours may be an early example. What's the s/n? X out the last two digits if you wish.

Thanks Brad. The 1915 is 77153 and the 1918 is N2115.

BSA and Enfield were still making them in 1918.....

That lower one is very interesting, enfield made, covered in MA lithgow parts, a lithgow 5 star stamp on the brass disc and to cap it off a JJCO importer mark and then even what might be a 1951 overhaul date...phew.

I went for 13 months without buying, almost cured myself then in May I fell down again. And last week I bought a nice #4 Savage. I'm doomed again.

Guys, this is really bad.... I'm looking to replace my Faz No4 Mk2 with a Savage No4 Mk1 and I just picked up my first No5. Of course, the idea of buying the new smelly is to replace my 1915 BSA. The numbers don't match on the BSA. So the idea is to sell the BSA to my buddy for the price of the new smelly.

Yeah... I've already had second thoughts about letting the BSA go. It was my first "rifle of the crown". Is it better to infect a friend or enjoy the fever?
I should mention the buddy has a No4 Mk2....:lol:

Does anyone know if the Savage rifles originally came with the two position sight?
