"filed" Swedish diopter sights

I've got two sets of Elit diopter sights for a Swedish Mauser. One looks like it has been ground or filed on the mounting surface to fit the rear bridge of the rifle, while one is "pristine", with several ridges on the bottom.

Anyone know what the deal is with the "filing" the bottom of the one and whether I need to file the pristine one to mount it?

Gunner, the left hand one looks as if it may have been filed to fit a large-ring Mauser action. In which case it will sit nicely on a Gew98/K98, but rock on a Carl Gustaf. The right hand one should not require filing, but does, alas, require drilling the bridge to take the mounting screw.

Very interesting opinion, Patrick!!! It's always great to have many heads working on this sort of thing.

I originally guessed it was to lower the diopter and therefore lower Point of Impact (POI) for the rounds fired at short distance (100m)....however, your idea is plausible too.

Calfed, can you show pictures with both of these diopters sitting on top of an m/96 reciever bridge (from the rear, of course)? Do they both contour to the bridge? I don't know if there is a difference in bridge contours between '96 and '98 actions or not.

I do, however, have one doubt in your idea, Patrick. There is a post on another forum that shows an Elit diopter specifically made for the large ring '98 mauser. This Elit diopter is not short, but rather taller and more bulky. It came straight from Sweden and is claimed to be from the inventor of the Elit diopter (I think).

Opinions seem to boil down to it was done to lower the POI at shorter distances, or it was done to fit a 98 series Mauser.

The rear bridges on my 98 Mausers seem to be very close or identical to the rear bridge on my Swede 96's, so not sure about the latter explanation.

I'll try to get a pic of them sitting on the M96 and the K98 rear bridge
