Type 2 rear sight info from FM23-7, 4-1944

I have an original copy of "FM 23-7 War Department basic Field Manual U.S. Carbine Caliber .30 M1 and M1A1 23 APRIL, 1944"

On pages 4 and 5 they refer to newer issued carbines having the adjustable rear sight (showing some excellent line drawing pictures of a Type 2), and earlier issue carbines having the L Type sight.

It shows that when the FM was authorized in April, 1944 the Type 2s were at least pending issue.

Just a little fact.

BTW, this is a great little manual on the Carbine. It is comprehensive with not only cleaning, but sighting, courses of fire, firing position and tactics to employ. It is 6 3/4" by 4 1/2" and has 209 pages.

I have half a dozen of various different manuals and years, but this is my favorite. Mine is an original in excellent condition, but the paper is really starting to age, so it sits in the gun safe most of the time. I may read it this week end while my wife is gone!

Interesting. Even in the 1942 version you post the link to, they refer to the new sight that will eventually be issued, and describe the type 2. That's two years before it was included in the 1944 manual I have. Interesting in light of the other thread about the time it took to introduce the type 2 sight. It seems it was on the drawing board for over two years. The pictures in the 1942 manual have an interesting "projected" view of what the sight will look like! Maybe a prototype.

Although I'm not an M1 Carbine collector, I thought that this "first printing" electronic version of the manual might be of some interest to the community. I couldn't find a PDF of the later 1944 version that you have to include in the MKL entry.

If anyone turns up a PDF file of the later version, email it to me and I'll add it to this MKL (Knowledge Library) entry.

I.B.M. had been suppling carbines with the new adjustable rear sight prior to March 1943. Due to failures in an endurance test March 16 / 17, 1943 they were temporarily discontinued. See Ruth, "M1 Carbine, Design, Development & Production."

That would be March 1944 not 1943. A typo in the book.
