I thought it was just a southern accent.
The steel "frogs" were implemented in late 1942 early 1943. But some manufactures has brass frogs in the system and completed the sling they had started. So you may find a 1943 dated sling with brass frogs.

They are ribbing you a bit. I thought is was during WWI, but I know squat about slings. Either Brophy or Campbell has the answer.

You might give Turner Slings a buzz. The owner is very interested in slings and a good guy. Note: he is very busy.
I have a Turner sling - they're excellent!
You will find 1942 dated Boyt slings with either brass or steel. Brass quickly became a strategic metal, and substitutes were found, even for the lowly 1¢ piece.
