I assume you have tried CMP? A serial lookup costs $25, but you can get lucky. See the Fall 2009 GCA Journal article "Joe Roberts, Sniper."
yes CMP looked it up and said it hasn't passed through them. i know one greek garand that was about 35 numbers off so it might have gone to the greeks.
I would ask CMP to find something very close in SN and have it shipped ASAP. I very much doubt if you ever find the exact SN, but fixing up a clone is OK. Good luck.
There's supposed to be 86,000 Garands coming back from Korea-but I don't know how you could check numbers when they get here.
I rebuilt 100596x and have saw an original 100963x. The original one came out of a barn from a stack of rifles. When my friend said he wanted to buy it the lady said you have to take the whole stack. How much $200. Gee can you do better. Nope. Oh well, OK. The owner has been offered $5000, but won't sell. See if the CMP has a barreled receiver with a serial number close. Rebuilding it is not bad. Only the rear sight is the hard part.
Good luck. I have been looking for my father in laws rifle. SA 1523350. Carried it when the 63rd Infantry Division pierced the Sigfried Line. I found one at a show 20 numbers off. It was a Korean War rebuild. I've been looking for 10 years now.
thanks guys, I was hopeing to find dads rifle before he passed away but I never found it. I'm still looking even after Dads gone now. I did get a nice all origional SA 1943 Garand but I'm still looking for dads.
