How Many Winchester Underwood Lineouts?

I had the opportunity to add a Winchester with an Underwood line out receiver to my collection this past weekend. The collector that owned it is in his mid 80s and is "thinning out the herd". He offerred it for sale at a fair price. It is all correct the best I can tell. The wood is in good shape with visible cartouche on the stock. You can easily see the lineout of the Underwood stamping on the receiver. The bevel on the rear of the receiver ia stamped AW. I ordered the book War Baby and am waiting for it to arrive. I looked through the 2 reference books I have but could not find information on how many line out carbines were produced by Winchester. Does anyone know the answer?

it's desirable and fairly rare but all things being equal lets say their are 11,000 W marked lineout Underwood to Winchester and say 10,000 T code lineout Underwood to Winchester and so on and so forth add them all up, you still have a lower ratio to the regular total production of Winchester made carbines, there so many variations if you just collected Winchesters. each one could be, if you will put in a category of it's own as seperate and distinct to the particular sub-contractor made receiver lined-out to Winchester. if you can get it for a good price pick it up you won't get hurt.

I did pick it up. I bought it for $1,150.00, a fair price in my mind. It put me one over the 10 manufactureres. The Winchester I already had is a T stamped receiver. So I guess I don't have a 100% Winchester carbine yet. I had seen drawings of how the line out looked, but never had seen one in real life. The overall condition is very good to excellent (NRA standards). The gentleman I bought it from has decided to start letting go of some of his carbine collection. Previously I bought a Standard Products carbine from him and it was correct with very good wood. About a year ago he had a Rock-Ola for sale. I had looked at it on a Saturday and thought about it all night. Sunday around noon I went to buy it from him, but I was about 5 minutes too late. When he still had the line out on Sunday I talked it over with my financial partner (my wife of 33 years) and decided to buy it. I didn't want this one to get away.

Just a little bit more to what Stu has said. The receivers that Winchester bought from Underwood were almost all sub-contractor made receivers for Underwood. But Winchester also bought finished and some unfinished receivers from Singer. The exact amount they bought is unknown. But you do have a Winchester made carbine. Just the receiver was a sub-contractor made one.

At todays prices what would a correct WTA marked Winchester bring?

Sounds like you would benefit from the Carbine Club newsletter back issues (and others would benefit from you sending data sheets in on your collection). Had you joined last year you would be on the way to the info you seek.
