I would like to get another M1, I haven't had one in 5-6 years. I am looking for a shooter. Should I look for a rebuilt M1 with an original mil. barrel or should I get a new replacement barrel, if so which aftermarket barrel would you recommend?

Some more 5.8 mil SA's are on the way via CMP. If you're looking for a shooter, I wouldn't pass any of those up. I bought my SA 5.8 mil Service Grade in July 2007 and I do not regret it. TE=1.0, MW=0.5.
Remember, buy the barrel, not the BS.

jharris, Mike has good advice if you can get such an M1 with those great specs for a price you can afford. I know 5.8 M Garands one notch above Service Grade (Correct Grade) listed by the CMP for $950 when available.
I am a shooter/collector so I would go for an all USGI Garand. 99% of the Garand would be mixmasters or restorations. I'd go for the least expensive best spec Garand I could find. Advertise for one on the WTB forum here at milsurp or CSP. Go for one with a TE no less than 4 and MW no more than 3. Check the CMP website for specs of Rack, Field, Service, Correct, and Collector Grade Garands.
Go to the website Curio and Relic Buds to see what the market prices are for varying degrees of Garands.
What exactly is CSP?
I have my CCW, if I re-join the GCA would I be qualified to buy from the CMP?
I was leaning toward another M1 from DGR, I have ordered two from him in the past and was very impressed with his work. Would you recommend a Correct Grade from the CMP over this?

Thanks for the link Dan,
I've been looking at CMP's site and like the sound of the "Correct Grade". Does anyone have any idea when they will get more in stock?
Also would I be able pick up a Correct Grade (when in stock) at the South Store?
Just email 'em and ask at CMP. I think their email address is custserve@cmp.com, or something linke that. Go to CMP Home and ask 'em directly.

If you live near the South Store, I would give serious consideration to the Service Grade Special. These are in near mint condition, with new CMP wood-for $795.00. Mine is a 5.4, with mint original barrel-MW is zero, TE is one. Best deal at CMP IMO. By near mint-mine is 99%. If these had original wood-they would grade above correct grade into collector grade status.

I've been looking at CMP and could not find a "Service Grade Special". They are listing a Service Grade at $595 and a CMP Special Grade at $995. The Special Grade has a new production barrel and a new production stock. I am really considering the Special Grade. I think I can swing $1000.00, but much more may be a strain right now. I would really like to get another DGR (I've had two) but $1610 may be out of my reach.
Is there a Service Grade Special that they are not listing? What steps do I need to take to buy at the Store? I may go ahead and call CMP tomorrow (Tue), but could use any advice or insight you guys can offer.
Thanks for all your help.
P.S.
Does anyone know what barrels and stocks CMP uses on their Speical Grades and any recommendations on them?
I found a forum on CMP's site, didn't know they had one. I think I can find most of my answers there. Thanks for all the help guys.
