The thick aperatures with punch mark and no tracks are Winchester. All Garand apertures are machined
I read that all Winchester aps were stamped?
Poyer and Riesch M1 Garand 1936 to 1957
Unfortunately, they really don't know the difference in cast, forged, stamped or milled. Plenty of errors in that book concerning manufacturing methods, sorry! Otherwise, its a fairly useful reference.
The only one worse than that is the one by that thompson klown that says you will put an uncut op rod through your forehead.

What is the best reference book for the M1?

The Red, Blue and Green cover books by Scott Duff are what you need to start. Take the Poyer & Reisch book and used it for a page marker.
One of Duff's books show an SA photo of a partilly finished series of sight apertures. You'll see how they were done.
