Did you do any washing/steaming with that?

I have a concentrate degreaser that I used on all of the stocks. A cap full in about a gal. of hot water. Washed with kitchen rag and a tooth brush in the bucket. I let it dry overnight. Then a wash with turpentine followed by denatured alcohol, repeat as needed. The top OI stock got some steam, the rest no. They were all black when I started. In pic two the bottom two are getting there last soak of BLO.....Frank

These look great. So, you used no stain or coloring? Just coats of BLO and elbow grease to get that nice finish?

Brasidas, the RMC stock has a patch in the left rail. I had to use a stain to help match the stock. I used Cabots gun stock stain. The rest are BLO. I don't have a tank (yet) so I warm up the BLO with a small torch in the can. I get it boiling then use a hobby brush to put it on. I do the whole stock inside and out, like Charlie painter recomends. I let it soak about an hour, then rub it in by hand (wearing disposable gloves) then wipe it down and buff. I repeat as needed.....Frank

After a deep cleaning or a full strip on a stock, I can get an idea of how dark the natural grain is by wiping a coat of mineral spirits on. This gives me an idea as to how dark it would be if just oiled. Many are lighter grained and end up being stained. If it's a dark cut, I move on to just oiling the stock.

Lumb Woodworking actually used Tung Oil for the final finish. On lighter colored stocks, the Tung Oil was tinted.

Just wanted to add that on stripped stocks that are still too dark......I use a 2 part Wood Bleach Solution made by Klean-Strip. It lightens the stocks' natural color and can really pull out hidden markings. Also helps to pull out those spotty black marks along with water stains.
