The 30th Infantry Division was a unit of the Army National Guard in World War I and World War II. It was nicknamed the "Old Hickory" division, in honor of President Andrew Jackson.

Check out the web sling on the guy in the right. Notice the ribbed "post-WW2" buckle, and the compare it to the web sling on the left.
Frank: There is an article written by Ernie Pyle describing all kinds of things carved into stocks by WW2 GIs.
Paul, I have read that piece by Pyle to. I have a Garand from CMP that has three sets of initials carved in it. I also have a carbine stock that has SG carved in the grip. I don't know if it the G.I.'s inintials or means sargent, but it's cool. I thought the one in Mark's pic looked like it was stamped rather than carved. What do you think about the slings? Hey have a good one. I've got to take a new pupp to the vet and will be back in a couple.....Frank
Congrats on the new puppy. I'm at the other end of the spectrum - a 15-year-old cat on his last legs that my oldest daughter is having a hard time accepting that he is seeing his last days.
Not too sure what to say about the slings but it seems from this picture that one cannot use the blanket statement that all WW2 M1 web slings had the flat buckle vice the ribbed buckle. As with all things like this there can be nuances.
Yes Paul I know what you mean. They become family and its very hard to see them go. It's especially tough on the kids growing up with the pets. My new pupp is a yellow lab (Rocky), half brother to one I lost this summer to blastomycosis (Gus). He was 11 months old and was going to be my new retriever after losing a three year old (Stormy) to a wolf in my woods. Stormy replaced my 12 year old chocolate (Reggie) who was still retrieving ducks at 12. Fond memories of them all. Best of luck with yours.....Frank
