Anyone know why this rifle has a notch cut into the rear stock?

I don't have all of the information with me but this rifle belongs to a friend. It is a Long Branch No 4, all of the rear sight mounting hardware has been removed/ground off. A ramp style sight was put on the front of the barrel and a rear sight was placed in about the location of a No 1. What intrigues me most is the flat notch that has been cut from the top of the rear stock. The notch is rectangular and neatly cut with a screw hole at the centre odf each end of the rectangle. This is the only photo I have right now.


Any Idea what this means?

Former cheek piece ?

That is my suspicion but I haven't seen a real sniper and can't find a photo of one with the piece removed.

My guess is that it's Bubba's work .... If it was a former sniper it would be marked No4Mk1(T)

Its just had a wood fillet added (which has now dropped off) in order to covert the butt into a Monte Carlo style with a pistol grip. Quite a common mod.

Were the cheekpieces on the original rifles just a saddle that screwed on?

Yes ( 2 screws) The top one in the picture which eventually became my L39 / L42 / Enforcer clone
