Probably from that white dude in the picture with the white hat and tall boots.
That's kinda what I was thinking...It looks like a pose of the old west pic.
Probably brought it home with him after The Big Horn party.
Fantastic photo... The carbines look to be early ones with the split sling swivel and the long comb stocks..... Seems odd a gun runner would want proof of his crime documented. May be a posed shot from a later era...

From the government. The Indians may have been hired by the Army as Scouts or the BIA may have given them the carbines under some other arrangement.
Them's ain't US Army Scouts, I reckon.
