Cmp is shipping this to me with this serial #. I have found through some research that it may be an Underwood recvr sold to Winchester? If so is this more or less desirable than a "normal" Win. What timeframe of Win. serial numbers would this correspond to if I was looking for correct parts..
I have been lurking here for a long time but this is my first post. Any help is appreciated because I can find very little information about this . Thanks.
Morfred, one of the very knowledgeabe guys here will have the specific info about the time frame of the manufacture. However, to answer you question about being desirable, from a collector standpoint the "lineouts" do seem to bring an extra premium over standard receivers. It really depends on the which batch of "lineouts" a particular carbine comes from (Inland to Underwood, Underwood to Winchester, Inland to Rockola, etc).
I looked over the serial list everyone posts to on CMP. Its not a complete list of all the carbines in private ownership or sold by CMP by any means, it is a list put together by posters willing to announce to the world what they own and who want to contribute.

There are 3 other underwood lineout to WTA listed in your serial range and all of them indicate that they were purchased via CMP Auction. So it should make you feel better that you are getting an auction-value carbine solely on the luck-of-the-draw.
If this is your first carbine, you will surely get addicted. Remember to post pictures when you get it delivered.
When Underwood finished their production in April 1944,they sold to Winchester a lot of finished and some unfinished receivers from all four of their sub-contractors. Your serial number is in a block assigned to Universal Winding Co. by Underwood and would have been marked with a W on the bevel of the receiver rear. It very well could have a W w A on the bevel to indicate it was used by Winchester. For a time frame for when used most likely during the summer of 1944.
Thank you both for your help. I bought this to shoot with a bunch of "older" Vets and was concerned at first because I couldn't find this in a list of Winchester serial numbers. Now it appears as though it may be a bit special. The information that you gave me is a good start. I have a lot to learn about this rifle.
