Auction Insanity

Got to get this off my chest. I've attended two auctions in the past two weeks devoted to firearms. Now I learned years ago that at this particular auction, you aren't likely to get a decent deal on anything good. For some reason, people bid the guns up pretty high here and it isn't for a lack of supply. There is a Cabelas within 40 minutes of here that sells guns for less than what the guns at auction sell for and these are brand new rifles.

In any case, Mosin-Nagant's. I watched four of them go up for auction in these two sales. One of the reasons I went was because I figured I'd at least be able to get a decent price on one of these.

Again, four weeks ago I purchased a 91/30 rearsenaled rifle in great shape with matching (but probably forced on the bolt) numbers at Cabelas for $89.

At the first auction, two 91/30's with non-matching numbers and nothing particularly special about them sold for $180.00 each. These were not rare or unusual rifles and were both in worse shape than the ones that Cabelas had been selling.

At todays auction a 1944 carbine sold for $280.00. Again, nothing special, 1946 manufacture, mismatched parts, arsenal refurbish. Bore decent but not great. The second rifle had a bit more going for it as it was a Remington but it too had gone through the arsenal refurbish and had a Soviet bolt and many other Soviet parts. I lost track of the final price on this but it was OVER $280.00 I couldn't believe it.

Makes me want to go grab the two 91/30's at the local gun shop that are selling for $99 each and take them to the auction for re-sale.

The title for your post says it all. To many get caught up in bidding and spend way more than items are worth.:bash:

I had to laugh last night, I looked at the local Dunham's ad and they started another Nagant sale on Saturday, the day of the auction. $79.00. This store is about half an hour from the auction house. I'm hoping to go check them out today but woke up not feeling especially well.

They've have managed to top the insanity. Today's gun auction featured one 91/30 Mosin Nagant, 1942 production all matching numbers, reworked import with bag of accessories, did not see the bayonet but assume it was probably there.

$350.00

Dunhams ad which starts tomorrow has them on sale for $89.00.

To be fair to the auction house, they started the bidding off at $100.00, not the throw it out there $200.00 you sometimes see. Bidding dropped to $65 before the first bidder bit, it went slow as I'm assuming those that know what they are worth bid it up to about $90.00 and then just went crazy as the crazies jumped in.

You are talking chump change. People go to auctions to buy. Just as long as they get something they are happy. Some body has to feed the bottom. gary
