I am seeing Type 38s for sale that say they are 7.7 mm, made in 1935. From what I've read, it appears that the Type 38 was 6.5 and the Type 99 was 7.7What is correct? Are there Type 38s that would utilize a 7.7 cartridge? Thanks.

if i recall correctly, before they made the change to the Type 99 there were some Type 38s made in 7.7 caliber to try out the new round.
That would be a spectacular find!
One very simple way to tell a T38 from a T99 is the vent holes on top of the receiver. Two vents - T38; one vent hole - T99. A few hundred T38 carbines and 38 long rifles were re-barreled, chamberted for 7.7x58 and action modifed to use the longer cartridge. This happened in the late 30's. they are extremely rare. You can see on by scrolling down to the Knowledge Libary, click on Japan and the second post is a T38 carbine in 7.7. Riceone
