A friend of my dads recently gave me a Garand. I am really interested in this rifle and plan on shooting it this summer it is at my local gunsmith getting a once-over to see if it is safe to fire. Judging by the condition of the stock, it looks a little beat up (pins, epoxy, no stamps). Any information on what I should and should not do with this rifle would be greatly appreciated.

That was quite a fine gift! What to do with it is easy, if the gunsmith ok's it enjoy shooting one of the finest rifles ever made. If you so desire you can always upgrade the stock to make it look better, the CMP has some very nice reproduction stocks for sale. If you like the way it looks just leave it and have fun. Remember, all of the little marks and dings in the stock and the wear on the metal parts all tell a story of what it has been through in it's lifetime. Post some pictures so we can check it out.
