38 Carbines came from the factory as such. Calvary rifles, if you mean the 38 with a 25" barrel, are cut down 38 long rifles. Not sure of the reason for making them but I beleive it was to test the consept of a shorter rifle for the infantry. Someone on this side of the pond coined the phase Calvary Rife. riceone
