A couple of quick ? on my No.4 Mk I

My No. 4 has serial # ROF G 212xx A on the left buttsocket, dated 7/42. Furniture has matching serial #'s. Bolt & mag. does not match. Brass BP. Some mis-mash of parts - Savage, Long branch, etc. (FTR ?)

-Is this a ROF Fazakerly produced rifle?
-Where there ever stacking swivels fitted to a No. 4?
-Would a Mk I cocking piece be correct for this date? I remember changing the CP 15 years ago (Sq. type) but can't remember what came with the rifle.

Even though it's an import stamped War Dog (typ. butt stock repair, dings) I meticulously cleaned it and oiled the stock.
I'm looking to get it technically correct - which is why i chose this forum :beerchug:

Not totally my field but as you do not have any answers yet, her are some observations.

The A suffix means that it has non-interchangeable parts. This may mean that it is a bitsa made up by Fazackerly from parts sent up from Enfield.

No4s, as such, do not have stacking swivels,

G212xx was an assigned Faz serial number for 1942.

No stacking swivels on the No4.

The A suffix means it has one or more non standard part.

There are several possible cocking pieces for your rifle. The first variation is the round button style, 2nd and most common is the slab with grasping grooves, 3rd and 4th variation are the war time expedient smooth side slab style.

This rifle sounds like a Turk rifle to me. How about some pictures?

On a British rifle, it is not "stacking" swivel, it is "piling" swivel.

-I'll remove my "Piling swivel"...years ago when I bought her I thought every well dressed No. 4 should have one. Now I know.

ps- I was stationed at RAF Fairford 1984-86, USAF/SAC. I still miss a cool pint of Whitbread best bitters!

RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire is now just a big industrial park. No more F-111's any more but the new owners want to mnount one at the old main gate ............... if yoiu know of one going cheap

Here is a turn-up for the book - for once I know more than Peter :D

You may be thinking of another airfield Peter (Upper Heyford?). I can assure that RAF Fairford is still an airfield. It is currently manned by the 420th Air Base Squadron USAF and is only used rarely. (Last used for B52s, B1s, KC-135s and KC-10s during the Iraq War.) However it will be further downgraded this year with the withdrawal of all uniformed staff.

Due the the length of its runway it is a TransOceanic Abort Landing site for the Space Shuttle. Although because that depends on having NASA trained fire-fighters on base I suspect that will go with withdrawal of the uniformed staff.

How do I know this? It is also the Home of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) and I work as a RIAT volunteer (its an RAF charity) at RAF Fairford every year.

There were hundreds of F111s at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Arizona last time I looked.

Ooops, you're right. I meant Upper Heyford. Well, Upper Heyford and Fairford, sound the same and easy to mix up but both in Gloucestershire .................... aren't they?
