Brown Bear ammo in 7.62x39. Says it is current Russian production and non-corrosive. Is it? As for what is good and not good ammo, I've heard Wolf it not particularly good. I don't really know, never fired any of this stuff before.
I'm having a hard time finding surplus ammo cheap for this caliber and if I can get non-corrosive for a little extra I'm willing to do it.
Probably you don't live in Canada where surplus 7.62 X 39 ammo is plentiful and quite cheap. Have seen and bought as low as $170.00 Canadian for 1200 rounds or as high as $200.00 for 1120 rounds. You have 7.62 X 54R in a abundant supply which I need .. want to do some trading?? Wish we could! Bought a case of 1200 at a place where there were skids of 7.62 X 39, proabably over 100,000 round just in the sales area let alone what was "in the back"
I'm looking at $140 for 500 rounds right now, it is more expensive than the 7.62x54, go figure.
I haven't shot the Golden or Silver bear but I've shot up a lot of Wolfie. It's as accurate as it's suppose to be. You can get better accuracy by handloading usually. With handloads I can keep most in a 2 1/2" circle at a hundred yards and I use a scope. Which I detach everytime from my Romanian WASR But I have old tired eyes. Sometimes the Wolf preforms better than handloads. I've shot some corrosive which shoots decent as well you just have to clean your weapon real well after. Hot Water and soap.
I normally shoot handloads and keep the other stuff for times when you can't pick up the brass
Better than the milsurp stuff, and non-corrosive. Not very common here in Canada however since the few boxes of it one stumbles upon have been "creatively imported" ...
I picked a few boxes of Sako made 7.62x39 FMJ the other day. Brass cased and non-corrosive.
It's too pretty to shoot and a lot more expensive than the Czech ball.
After reading all of your comments. My personal opinion is that Wolf is satisfactory ammo however I have had some weak primers, and a few cook offs in the chamber. They have jammed in my wife's russian "pre-ban" SKS but the Norinko likes it just fine. Brown Bear is our personal favorite. My wife can hold a (no-****) 1.5" group at 100yds. Using a Chaote scope mount, drilled and tapped to the reciever. A cheap Centerpoint Wal-Mart scope, Bipod, a composite stock with a homemade leather cheek rest. I made the gun to fit her 4'10" frame. I also got the lighter springs and firing pin. Little work on the sear to smooth the action out. My wife loves it. I'm going to start doing some reloads for her soon and I'll let you know how that turns out. Again, In my opinion, we like the brown bear, it's reliable, and pretty accurate. It really helps to have some good discipline, and tune your rifle. I've never worked the Norinko yet, I'm just going to keep that as an open site, 50yd'er. I'll post some pics and recipies of the reloads. If you guys are interested. I'm no expert or egomaniac, just an old 22 retired Navy SAR, brown water guy. OH and the wife (who's leaning over my shoulder) says she don't know ****. She just shoots and get's ****ed when she doesn't keep hittin the same hole all the time. Women..............
