Which book would be a good book for a 1st time M1 owner? A little history and pics of different variations + care and feeding. Sort of a overall manual for the beginner shooter collector thats easy to read.

M1 owners guide by Scott Duff.
Ditto! Scott A. Duff
Scott Duff's is the second one for when you start needing more detailed information. I normally tell folks that the first to get is Bruce Canfield's on Garands and Carbines - it is a great overview and will let you get a good taste of all the different areas and allows you to find which is the most enticing to you. Then get Scott's red book and you can go happily broke trying to replicate what you find there, like the rest of us ...
AMHO - best regards ...
Duffs Red Book. It cover's only through the end of WWII but has lots of excellent data about correct parts & ID. His blue book covers through the Korean war, end of production & end of SA but is sparse on details.
Duff's Pocket Guide (also blue but only $10) is excellent for identifying parts from early production to the end.
...and, a fun little picture essay book to see the history and service of the weapon is The M1 Does My Talking by Robert Bruce.
Bob
ditto, bodyman happily going broke, but so is my wife!
