Can anyone help identifying a scope i just aquired. it is marked - telescope no78 mk1 2535/64 99-960-6970 Dr Wohler Kassel 2 x 17'. I suspect it may be ww2 German but would appreciate everyones collective wisdom. Photos to follow when I get back home from overseas.

Dr.Wohler Kassel Octamar was a maker of riflescopes and observer glasses for the Wehrmacht. He was supplier for the ZF 41 Makers Code is: clb, Dr. F. A. Wohler, Kassel.

Anything marked no78 mk1, sounds like a terribly british military numbering code, did the good doctor defect?
It sounds like an artillery or mortar scope ...
I suggest do a google images search ...

the numbering with MK was used in the Imperial german Army and for a short time in the Wehrmacht too. It is not only the British numbering. It changed later in war to only the makers Code and the "Ausführung" or "Modell".

Unfortunately this scope is for the recoiless anti tank launcher (84mm Charlie G in British Army parlance) and has a very short eye relief which means it could only really be used on a .22LR if put on a rifle (which is not what it was designed for).
As I recall, they're very heavy too.
Dr Wohler also made German military sniper scopes during WWII.
This scope No 78 MK1 was used as a sighting telescope for the Carl Gustav M48 84mm recoilless Anti Tank launcher used by the British Military from 1961 to 1991
