Unidentified marking.

I've been trying to solve this problem for sometime, the backwards "Z". Does anyone know who put it there or what it means ?. Here's three examples that people have sent me. The first is the same as the last to show the S.G. Thanks.

I have an IP with markings in that area, but I have no idea what they are. It also has a =in a circle on the rear bevel next to the recoil plate. I will get some pics up when I get home. Mine was a mostly original import with no other markings. There is Bavarian Province that marked carbines in that area on the bavarian website. IIRC it was stag antlers from the Bremen with stag antlers, but yours and mine are not antlers. Sorry I could not give you an answer, but you are not the only one wondering.

I have something like that on the barrel in a gas area of one of mine... I always assumed it was just an inspector's stamp... never took it as sigificant.

Update comment - I went back to check the above carbine. The mark I was referring to does not look like the backward "z" above. So in the words of the SNL church lady "never mind..."

Here's the "stag antlers". This is what the Wurttemberg Polizei placed on the Carbines that they were loaned by the U.S in the post WW2 years #3,366,404. Have a look at my other thread, or refer bavarianm1carbines.com, it's on there. Same carbine. We just have to keep the S.G slingwell markings and the German thing seperate, until we figure out a little more. Thanks. Mike.

I know it's been discussed before but I don't remember what it was - maybe Bavarian, because it definitely is not U.S.

usgicollector, here's something interesting on the heel, like yours. This pic was sent to me in 07. If I can figure out any more I'll post.

Thats interesting. I wish I could give you more info on mine, but all I know about mine is that is the way it came. It is the black oxide color of both of you carbines and typical of the German/Austrian finish. The Muzzle is counterbored. All Halmarks of Germany/Austria it does not have any markings on the left rail where the bavarians were marked, but it may have been ground off. I wonder if this may be one of the unidentified German areas markings. It also came in an unmarked very fat highwood stock. It has its original IPN front sight with height number on the side and Type 1 band, S'G' bolt and RP flip sight. It had a early underwood trigger housing with unmarked T2 safety, inland T2 dogleg, and I can't remeber the rest right now. All Of the trigger housing parts were also black oxided. PM me if you need anymore info. If we could figure out some stuff on this one it would make a good article.
